When the first cervical vertebra, known as the Atlas or C1, is not correctly positioned relative to the skull, we speak of an atlas misalignment.

This vertebra can change in various ways — through rotation, lateral displacement or by being positioned too far forward or backward. Such changes can affect the second cervical vertebra, the Axis, and trigger a series of reactions that negatively impact the entire musculoskeletal system. The maximum documented rotation angle of this vertebra is 8 degrees.

An atlas misalignment differs from typical muscle tension or joint blockages in the cervical spine, as addressed in osteopathy, and cannot simply be treated through conventional manipulation or massage.

How does atlas correction work?

In atlas therapy, a mechanical vibration pressure is applied very precisely to specific points below the occipital bone. This targeted pressure, intense enough to be effective, slowly stretches the muscles surrounding the Atlas. It also counteracts the tension of the ligaments holding the vertebra in place, allowing it to gradually return to its optimal position.

How do I recognize an atlas misalignment?

”Do you have a crooked nose?” This question may seem strange, but it serves as a simple test for a possible atlas misalignment. A photo from above shows whether your nose runs straight to the sternum. A lateral deviation could indicate a problem.

What is Atlas Correction?

The term “atlas correction” describes a manual therapy treatment for disorders in the head joints and lower cervical spine, with a focus on mobilizing the first cervical vertebra, the Atlas, when it is misaligned or blocked.

How much does atlas therapy cost and is it dangerous?

An atlas therapy session costs $310 and is completed in a single session of 60–120 minutes. Atlas therapy offers an innovative and safe approach that differs fundamentally from chiropractic and osteopathic methods. No sudden rotations or pressure on the cervical spine are used.

How does a treatment session work?

Atlas therapy usually consists of one session. First, it is checked whether a correction is necessary. An intensive massage with the vibration device “Libro” then relieves muscle tension and prepares the correction. Once the Atlas is correctly positioned, the goal is achieved and the spine returns to its natural alignment. A follow-up check takes place after 8 weeks to confirm the adjustment.
