When the first cervical vertebra, also known as the Atlas or C1, is not correctly aligned in relation to the skull, this is called an atlas misalignment. This misalignment can appear as rotations, lateral displacements, or a position of the atlas vertebra pushed too far forward or backward. Such changes can also affect the second cervical vertebra, the Axis, and trigger a variety of reactions with negative effects on the entire musculoskeletal system. The highest documented rotation angle of this vertebra is 8 degrees. An atlas misalignment differs significantly from typical muscle tension or joint blockages of the cervical spine, as treated in osteopathy. It cannot simply be corrected by manual therapy or standard massages.
